RE: Gas pump zip code
We have not seen them down there yet, but the US is often behind in these kind of things. What I have heard about that, but not tried yet is to put your zip code in as just the numbers in your postal code followed by two zeroes. It is supposed to work!
RE: Have Your Ducks In A Row @ Border
They turned me back because they assumed I was poor, and poor people are not allowed into Canada by law. I really didn't want to go through such a country full of snobs, so I willingly turned around and flew first class to Alaska.
So canada can go duck itself.
Well I guess this posts proves that at least the Canadian Border Authorities get it right!
RE: SINDICATURA
I don't think you can join it! It's the Mexican police internal affairs department and it's who you ask for if you are being shook down.
We used it with great success a few years ago near Tampico.
RE: FELLOW CANADIANS CROSSING THE U.S. BORDER
I'm with Rob on this one. We never take any booze down there with us.
We don't make our own beer or wine, so that doesn't come into it, and I am really odd in that I prefer American beer to Canadian! so that doesn't come into it either.
As Bert said, you may be able to theoretically bring any unopened Canadian bottles back with you, but what's the point in that.
There is a bit of a grey area about partially opened bottles, but that is going to be at the discretion of the Inspecting officer. You dont want to push this though, as they may not bother with a couple of bottles with a few ounces in each one, but would bother with several bottles with just a few ounces gone from each one.
In any event, you want to try to minimise the time you spend with these guys. If they are going to pull you over to measure exactly how much booze they have, they may as well do a full body cavity search!
RE: Veteran's Day
We have just watched the Remembrance Day ceremonies on TV from both locally here in Victoria and the very large one in the capital, Ottawa.
At both events, they said that the crowds were much larger than they have ever been. They also commented on the large numbers of younger people that are attending these ceremonies.
In the past couple of weeks, I have been pleasantly surprised by the numbers of young people wearing the Remembrance Day Poppies.
I have to say that of all the 'holidays', this one probably has by far the greatest impact on me of them all.
RE: What About The USD cheque?
I have never done a RV import, but I am familiar with the banking side.
I would find it strange if the cheque for the lien would be payable to you, it would normally be payable to the lien holder, the bank or finance company.
The cheque is in US dollars, so depending on what rate they used, (there is no such thing as an 'official' rate) there may need to be an adjustment made, depending on what the BUYING rate for US is on the day the lien holder deposits it.
A Cheque in US dollars and drawn on a US bank can be negotiated by any Canadian bank, but they MAY put a longer than usual hold on the funds as their banking system is much slower than ours. However, as you are passing the cheque to someone else , it shouldn't matter to you.
RE: Do you remember the TV show, "The Prisioner?
Another US remake of a British Classic! How well do you think it will turn out? I bet that there will be a lot more explosions!
BTW, a small point,
First aired in 1966/67 and made in England.
It was filmed in Wales, Portmeirion to be exact. And no, Wales is not IN England, that is like saying that Texas is in California!
RE: Warning about carrying a lot of cash ( esp.Canadians)
I'm surprised that anyone in Georgia has even heard of Canada, let alone know that they wouldn't be armed !
The only way that a weapon would have helped is if any of the victims were carrying at the time and were faster on the draw than their attackers.
No wonder we try & get through the US as quickly as possible when we drive to Mexico!
RE: Warning about carrying a lot of cash ( esp.Canadians)
When and where did this happen? I did a couple of searches but could not find anything.
As for carrying large amounts of cash, then no it does not make any sense when travelling in your own country. However, once you start crossing borders, then it becomes a different situation. Debit & credit cards used in another country are subject to all kinds of hidden charges & fees which many, including folks on these forums are not aware of.
I would agree that the cost savings in taking cash may not be worth the extra risk involved. I would guess that these people were taking their park fees for the entire winter down there?
RE: 1 size fit's all baseball caps- don't fit me-that's not all
I would like one that comfortably fits a fat head like your's truly...a 7 3/4 size.
I have never been able to find a hat to fit me, until quite recently. My kids had been in the local Tilley Hat outlet inquiring as to the largest size they had. Their normal sizes only go up to the usual 7 5/8, but they said that they had a custom made one there that had never been picked up. I don't want to say what it is, but it's much bigger than 7 3/4!
They let them bring it home and yes it fits great.
As for baseball hats, none of the one size ones fit, nor do any of the ones with the plastic straps at the back. If I'm lucky, some of the ones with the fabric straps will fit, but I assume that they were factory rejects!
RE: How long is a 19' ladder?
This is a combination step/extension ladder. It is in the 'extension' mode that it is only 17', but it does not say as such on the label, it only refers to 19'.
When I think about it, aren't tarps also smaller than their stated size, but I think they state that on the label.
In my lifetime, I have bought a lot more 2x4s, and a lot more RVs, than ladders, so I was not aware of the 'shrinkage'!
How long is a 19' ladder?
No, it's not a silly question. Maybe it's me, but I would have thought that a 19' ladder would actually be 19'. After all, if you buy 10 lbs of potatoes, you would expect them to weigh 10lbs. 50 yards of rope is 50 yards long.
I bought one of those five in one ladders from our local Costco (it's made by COSCO, how confusing is that?) It was a good price and especially for the weight rating that I need these days. When I unwound it on the driveway, I find that it is only 17'! The only way I can get it to be 19' is to take it apart and lay all the pieces end to end. Trouble is, that it doesn't seem to work that way!
Luckily, it's still long enough, but I still feel a bit cheated. I wouldn't have minded if somewhere it said 'max usable length 17'' as I have seen on other items, but it doesn't. :M
RE: Olympic Flame
Well, it was quite the event! After we picked out a spot to watch it from, we realised that this was going to be one of the relay handover points, so it turned out to be a great vantage point. So many police & security though, and they seemed to block off the roads way too early.
We walked up to the pub, had lunch, wandered over to the roundabout at the other end of the village, to watch it from, met a lot of neighbours, met a film crew from SBS Korea, and wandered home.
All in all a good day out, and thats it for me as far as the Olympics go!
RE: Olympic Flame
Well this is the 'Left' coast, and they have said that this will be the 'Greenest' games ever. I am just watching the ceremonies downtown on TV, and the 'Political Correctness' is overwhelming!
Olympic Flame
The Olympic Flame has just arrived in Canada in preparation for the Winter Games next February in Vancouver/Whistler.
Not being a sports fan myself, I care little for the games themselves. However, I find it quite exciting that the Torch Relay will be coming through our little village in just a few hours. I think we'll wander up to the village centre after lunch to watch all the Razzmatazz.
This will be the longest torch relay in history, starting here in Victoria, and then going north to the Arctic, out to the east coast, then back to Vancouver by next February. I was amazed to see that they did bring the flame on a Canadian military transport, in it's own seat in what looks like a Welsh miners lamp!
I was disappointed to see that so many groups are planning to protest the torch relay & the games themselves. Hopefully, that won't happen.
